2.34/14= N = 0.167
5.34/16 = O = 0.333

divide moles by least amount of moles

N = 0.167/.167 = 1
O = 0.333/.167 = 2

this way it can be found by emperical formula.

formula will be NO2

M of Nitrogen= 2.34/16

                       = 0.167

M of Oxygen = 5.34/16

                       = 0.334

Simplest formula of the compound is = 0.167 : 0.334

                                                               = 1 : 2

Simplest formula = NO2
