Given:
Equal masses of CH4, O2 and SO2.
Total Pressure, P = 10 atm
To Find:
Partial pressure of CH4 in the mixture.
Calculation:
- Let the mass of each of the gases be 'w' gm'.
- Mole fraction of gas CH4 = (w/16) / (w/16 + w/32 + w/64)
⇒ X = (1/16) / (7/64)
⇒ X = 4/7
- Partial pressure of CH4, P(CH4) = X × P
⇒ P(CH4) = 4/7 × 10
⇒ P(CH4) = 40/7 atm
- Hence, the the partial pressure of CH4 in the mixture is 40/7 atm.
- So the correct answer is option (b) 40/7 atm.
