A general wishes to draw up his 7500 soldiers in the form of a square. After arranging them, he found out that some of the soldiers are left out. i) How many soldiers were left out? ii) How many more soldiers are needed to form a square form?

First, find the square root of 7500 which is 86 and the remainder is 104.

i) The remainder is the number of soldiers left out i.e 104 soldiers.

ii) The minimum number of soldiers required to form a square is

   87^2- 7500 = 7569 - 7500

                       = 69 soldiers
