a gentleman who was fashionably dressed was strolling along with a gold-headed cane in his hand when he was hailed by a miserable looking lame man apparently in needy circumstances. The gentleman's compassion was aroused and he gave him a shilling. Another man standing near, there upon came up and said, "How can you be so foolish? Don't you know that fellow is not a cripple at all? He is sheer cheat; just lend me that stick of yours till I beat him for his roguery." The gentleman, not thinking anything was wrong, acceded to request. The beggar having heard what was said, promptly dropped his crutches and botled like a trained athelete. The other man rushed after him in hot pursuit shouting that he would give him his due desert when he caught him. Both disappeared round a corner.
