A girl was eight years old on her first birthday. How could that be?

She was born on February 29, 1896. The year 1900 was not a leap year (only centuries divisible by 400 are leap years), so the next February 29 fell in 1904 when she was eight.

A girl born on 29 feb 1796 will celebrate her 1st  birthday  on 29 feb 1804

Hence she will be 8 year old on her 1st birthday

Step-by-step explanation:

Leap year comes every 4 years but if in between year comes which is divisible  by 100 then leap year is if its divisible by 400

Hence 1700 , 1800 , 1900 , 2100 are not leap year

so after 1696 next leap year would be after 8 years on 1704

after 1796 next leap year would be after 8 years on 1804

For example :

A girl born on 29 feb 1796 will celebrate her 1st  birthday  on 29 feb 1804

Hence she will be 8 year old on her 1st birthday
