A girl is going to her relatives' place from her home. She first walks 2 km towards east and then 1 km towards north-west. What is her displacement when she reaches her destination?

Explanation: We know that displacement is that displacement is the shortest path covered by the body. As it is making a right angle triangle with sides 2kilometre as base and 1 kilometre as height whereas the displacement asked is the hypotenuse.

So by Pythagoras theorem,

(Displacement )^2 = base^2 +height^2

Displacement =√1+4

√5

hence the displacement is√5km.
