The candles had been burning together for 3 hours.

Step-by-step explanation:

Suppose the candles had been burning for x hours.

After x hours:

First one had burned x/6 leaving (6-x)/6

Second one had burned x/4 leaving (4-x)/4.

But, given that after x hours, first candle is twice as long as the second.

Therefore (6-x)/6 = 2(4-x)/4.

6 - x/6 = 8 - 2x/4

4(6 - x) = 6(8 - 2x)

24 - 4x = 48 - 12 x

12x - 4x = 48 - 24

8x = 24

x = 24/8

x = 3

Thus we get x = 3
