(a) When magnesium reacts with aqueous nitric acid, there will be the displacement of hydrogen and it will form hydrogen gas and magnesium nitrate.

M g(s)+2 H N O_{3}(a q) \rightarrow M g\left(N O_{3}\right)_{2}(a q)+H_{2}(g)

Magnesium Nitric acid Magnesium Nitrate Hydrogen

(b) Aluminium and magnesium can displace hydrogen from dilute hydrochloric acid.

Explanation:

As per the series of reactivity:

  • There will be a decrease in reactivity to Right from Left:
  • Potassium -> Sodium -> Lithium -> Calcium ->Magnesium -> Aluminium -> Copper -> Zinc -> Ferrous -> Tin (Sn) -> Lead (Pb) -> Hydrogen -> Copper -> Mercury -> Silver -> Gold
  • This shows that when a metal reacts with other metals, there will be a displacement reaction or displacement from their solution.
