The name of the law is the law of constant proportion and it was given by Joseph Louis Proust.

  • The Law of Constant Proportion states that a chemical compound always contains the same proportion of elements by mass. This law is also called the Law of definite proportions. Joseph Louis Proust was the one who gave this law and thus it is also called Proust's Law.
  • The law of constant proportions says that the chemical compounds are formed of elements that are available in a fixed ratio by mass. This means that any pure sample of a compound, no matter what the source may be, will always have the same elements that are available in the same ratio by mass. For example, pure water will always have hydrogen and oxygen in a fixed mass ratio (The ratio is 1:8).
