let's go simple ok giving out the electron from the valence shell of the atom to another atom is known as ionic compound...

mutual sharing between the electrons of valence shell between the two atom is termed as covalent compound.

example of an ionic compound is NaCl
that is common salt
an example of a covalent compound is ch4 that is methane

the ionic compound has more melting and boiling point than that of a covalent compound.
the ionic compound tends to be hard and brittle
but the covalent compound is soft.. and not that rigid than that of ionic compound
