. A glass block is immersed inside water. The refractive index of the glass block and water is 1.52 and 1.33 respectively.
(i) What is the refractive index of glass with respect to water?
(ii) What is the refractive index of water with respect to glass?
(iii) If the speed of light in air is 3 x 108 m/s, what is the speed of light in glass and in water?

Explanation:

I) refractive index of glass w.r.t air =1.52

refractive index of water w.r.t air =1.33

refractive index of glass w.r.t water =1.52/1.33=1.14285714

ii) refractive index of glass w.r.t air =1.52

refractive index of water w.r.t air =1.33

refractive index of water w.r.t glass =1.33/1.52=0.875

iii) n=c/v

v=c/n

speed of light in glass=(3×108)/1.52=324/1.52=213.157895 m/s

speed of light in water=(3×108)/1.33=324/1.33=243.609023m/s
