When a white light is made to pass through a prism, formation of a spectrum of seven colors occurs showing white light is a combination of seven separate colors. Prism only acts as a medium for the dispersion oflight made of the seven colors. Refraction occurs when the light falls on the prism.

When a light enters from air to the glass slab , it bends ( Changes its direction ) at the interface ( boundary bwtween air and glass ).

After emerging the glass slab , Light again bends at the interface ( glass - air ) , the light ray ( emergent ray ) which emerge out from the glass slab become parallel to the incident ray...

There is no angle between the incident ray and emergent ray...angle is 0...This is because of parallel surface of glass slab...

To see the specteum , there has to be certain angle between incident ray and emergent ray...But in case of glass slab , angle is 0...So when light enter the glass slab it changes its direction but once it emerge out the glass it become parallel to the incident ray...simply light shows no deviation when it passes through the glass slab...it gets dispplaced so we called it lateral displacemment...

In prism , refracting surfaces are not parallel , they are inclined to each other...That angle is called anhle of prism...So when light passes through the glass prism it deviate from its original path..a certain angle between incident ray and emergent ray is so formed , which is called angle of deviation...

Due this reason , we get spectrum on white screen at different angles...
