from the centre. Determine the apparent position of the bubble when viewed from

(refractive index of glass = 1.5) nearest surface.

Explanation:

Solution:

Given,

Refractive index of the glass sphere, μ1 = 1.5

Refractive index of the air, μ2 = 1

object distance from the surface, u = - ( 6 - 1 ) = - 5cm, as the bubble is 1cm from its centre.

Radiusof the sphere, R=−6cm

Using the formula for refraction on the curved surface, we get

=> μ2 / v − μ1 /u =( μ2 − μ1 )/ R

=> 1/v - 1.5/-5 = ( 1.5 - 1 )/-6

=> v = - 2.60m.

Hence the air bubble appear at a distance of 2.6cm from the survace to the observer.
