Length of the mercury column is 19 cm.

Given-

  • Length of glass tube = 133 cm
  • Cubical coefficient of glass (γ glass) = 26 × 10⁻⁶
  • Cubical coefficient of mercury (γ Hg) = 182 × 10⁻⁶

According to the question ,the change in the volume of glass and mercury will be same at all temperature. So

(V₀)glass .γ glass . t = (V₀)Hg . γ Hg . t

Let the length of the mercury column be x.

So,

(V₀)glass = a₀ l₀

(V₀)Hg = a₀ x

By substituting the value we get

a₀ l₀ .γ glass = a₀ x γ Hg

x = l₀ .γ glass/γ Hg

By putting the values of γ and length we get

x = 26 × 10⁻⁶ × 133/ 182 ×10⁻⁶

x = 19 cm
