A Glory Has Departed was a speech
made by India’s first Prime Minister about Mahatma Gandhi three days after the
latter’s assassination. In this speech, Nehru talked about the grief and shock
of the Indians on hearing about the loss of their leader. Gandhiji had been
instrumental in brightening the lives of his fellow Indians, and with his
death, their lives were plundered into darkness. He won his way into the hearts
of the rich and poor alike. He would continue to live in the hearts of millions
of Indians for a long time.

A Glory has Departed is a speech which was delivered ex-tempore by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, the 1st Indian Prime Minister, addressing the Constituent Assembly at New Delhi on 2nd February 1948, 3 days following the assassination of Mahatma Gandhiji earlier that evening. It is considered as one of the great speeches in history
EXPLANATION:
- Nehru expressed his sorrow and shame that an Indian and Hindu had raised his hand against Gandhiji. The entire world had paid its tribute to Gandhiji and one cannot add that with empty words of praise. Nehru said although Gandhiji is no more, he lives in the hearts of millions of Indians and would continue to live for immemorial ages.
- According to Nehru, every Indian must feel bad for failing to protect Gandhiji. Just words of praise are of no use when Gandhiji himself demanded a life of labor and sacrifice. Nehru wished that in the midst of the encircling gloom, the flames lightened by Gandhiji in every Indian’s heart must illumine the land. Nehru said that we stand on the perilous edge of the present and past.
- The biggest danger was the lack of faith which comes to us when one finds great talk and less achievement. Nehru stated that we must commit ourselves to Gandhiji'’ great task, to oppose and eradicate evil wherever we see it. Nehru had promised that the govt would take all steps to stop violence and hatred since by doing this Indians would demonstrate themselves to be worth of Gandhiji’s follower. Nehru stated that we must be proud and thankful to be associated with a person like Gandhiji .
