A goat eats away all the leaves of a small herb . How did the plant survive witout leave

The plant could survive without leaves because even though food is prepared only during photosynthesis, it also get extra supplements from the soil which it uses as food. So we can conclude that plants can survive without leaves also.
however, its for a small period of time...
