A good writing is the product of good reading habits -
- For doing any creative work, (eg. painting, writing, dancing etc.) we need some sort of inspiration to learn from. Without getting any inspiration, the final outcome of a creative work may not be up to the mark.
- Similarly, in the field of writing, the inspiration comes from other written substances. While reading those other written substances we gather information about our required subject, we gather knowledge about the writing pattern/style and we also develop a vision of thinking in a better way. All of this combines into our writing capability and the final writing product becomes excellent, if we really try our best.
- So, in simple words, reading is the raw material for the factory of writing, and here, a good amount of raw material ensures a good quality of final writing product.
Criteria of good writing skills -
- The inspiration source should be informative as well as interesting.
- The conveying process should be focused on simplicity yet informative. Unwanted complexity should be omitted in most cases.
- Choice of good words, good formation of sentences, properly arranging the writing structure etc.
- Correct, courteous, communicative - these are also required in any good writing piece.

The ability to write well is indeed the product of good reading habits.
Good reading habits mean the following:
- Reading regularly- Those who read regularly, for knowledge or pleasure, learn various reading strategies on their own.
- Enjoying a variety of texts- Over time, avid readers develop the ability to appreciate types of texts from a variety of genres.
- Not letting one new word hamper the joy of reading- Regular reading helps an individual roughly understand the meaning of a new word simply by looking at the context it is present in.
Good writing abilities mean:
- Writing with clarity- An individual is able to communicate her thoughts clearly. There is no confusion in the reader's mind.
- Using good vocabulary- The diction used while writing about a topic is appropriate. The individual uses idioms and proverbs too, besides having a wide range of words to choose from, to convey the exact expression or feeling.
- Writing with cohesion- Each paragraph or stanza of the text is connected to the rest of the body. Nothing is abrupt or disconnected.
- Grammatically correct- There are no awkward sentences and the text is free of grammatical errors.
When you look at the criteria of good writing, it becomes clear that good writing skills need practice. Also, reading texts that have already been written exposes one to fresh ways of writing, new vocabulary and imagery. Until one does not read enough, one will not know what good writing is all about. Therefore, reading is an important part of developing writing skills.
