A student took a green coloured substance ‘X'in a test tube and heated it over the flame of a burner. A brown coloured residue was formed which on further decomposition formed white solid 'Y' along with the evolution of two gases with the burning smell of sulphur.
(i) Identify 'X' and 'Y'
(ii) Write the balanced chemical equation.
(iii) Name the type of reaction.
The substance in green colour is Ferrous Sulphate . When it is kept in the air for a longer time it decomposes to form Ferric oxide , sulphur dioxide and sulphuric oxide .
(i) So 'X' in the above is Ferrous sulphate .
And 'Y' is Ferric oxide.
(ii) The chemical equation is as follows:-
Balanced Equation
(iii) The reaction is a decomposition reaction.
