it is connected to earth coz the xtra circuit flowing should not lead to short circuit and the xtra current should go directly into earth.

in electrical wire colour significance coding green wire stands for "earthing", as the name suggests it is connectecd to earth to pass on any excess current if by chance there is any leak in any wire that is , if a wire is torn and electricity is flowing freely, this can hurt any living creature, hence the current is passed down to the earth which effectively nullyfies them.
