The answers to the following questions are given as follows:

(a) The compound X is Ferrous (II) Sulphate, i.e., FeSO4 .

(b) The products A, B and C are Sulphur Trioxide gas (SO3), Sulphur Dioxide gas (SO2) and Ferric Oxide (Fe2O3) respectively.

(c) The two observations are as follows:

  • The gases evolved during this thermal decomposition are colourless.
  • These gases have a characteristic pungent odour.

(d) The balanced chemical reaction is given as;

2 FeSO4 (s) → Fe2O3 (s) + SO2 (g) + SO3 (g)
