this is because of corrosion

the copper vessel or statues got green layer because when copper reacts with moisture it forms a layer of copper oxide with moisture which is a green layer

carbon dioxide in moist air reacts with the statue. copper loses its lustre due to formation of green layer of copper carbonate on the statue.this is known as patination of copper.
