Question :

A greengrocer sold 55 oranges and 135 apples in a particular week. He earned a profit of ₹2 by selling one orange and incurred a loss of ₹1 by selling one apple. How much money did he lose that week?

To find :

How much money did he lose that week?

Solution :

A greengrocer sold 55 oranges and 135 apples in one week

On selling each orange he earns a profit of ₹ 2

And selling each apple he suffers a loss of ₹ 1

So,

Profit for selling 55 oranges = 55 × ₹2 = ₹110

∴ He earned a profit of ₹110 on selling 55 oranges

Loss for selling 135 apples = 135 × ₹1 = ₹135

∴ He suffers a loss of ₹135 on selling 135 apples

Now,

So loss this week = ₹135 - ₹110 → ₹25

∴ He has a loss of ₹25 this week after selling 55 oranges and 135 apples
