Step1 :

Total amount that a group of friends spend = 1800

Amount that 'x' no. of friends had to pay = $\frac{1800}{x}$

But given that 4 friends did not turn up , and the other had to pay Rs 5 extra each for the trip .

⇒ Amount that (x-4) friends had to pay = $\frac{1800}{(x-4)}$

So , the  extra amount that the other friends had to pay

= $\frac{1800}{(x-4)} - \frac{1800}{x}$

Step 2:

⇒ $\frac{1800}{(x-4)} - \frac{1800}{x} = 5$

⇒1800x- 1800x +7200 = 5 (x-4)x

⇒ 7200 = $5x^{2} - 20 x$

⇒  $5x^{2} - 20x - 7200$= 0

⇒$x^{2} -4x - 1440 = 0$

⇒$x^{2} -40x +36x -1440 = 0$

⇒x(x-40) + 36 (x - 40) = 0

⇒(x-40)(x+36)

Therefore , x-40 = 0 ⇒x = 40 and x +36 = 0 ⇒x = -36 (negative sign is neglected)

So , 40 friends went for trip .
