A group of men decided to do a job in 5 days but 10men kept dropping out every day if the job was completed at the end of the 6th day find the initial number of men who had signed up for the work

No. of Men * No. of days = Work Done

or,

N1*D1 = N2*D2

Lets assume there were x people in the beginning

For LHS

Total work = 8x

For RHS,

Work done on day 1 = x * 1 (where 1 is 1 day)

Work done on day 2 = (x-10) * 1

Work done on day 3 = (x-20) * 1

....

and so on

Work done on day 12 = (x-110) * 1

Summation gives us net work = 12x - 660.

8x = 12x - 660

This gives x = 165
