A group of men decided to do a job in 8 days. But since 10 men dropped out after 1st day, 2 more men dropped out after 2nd day, 2 more men dropped out after 3rd day and so on, the job got completed at the end of 12th day. How many men were there at the beginning?

No. of Men * No. of days = Work Done

or,

N1*D1 = N2*D2

Lets assume there were x people in the beginning

For LHS

Total work = 8x

For RHS,

Work done on day 1 = x * 1 (where 1 is 1 day)

Work done on day 2 = (x-10) * 1

Work done on day 3 = (x-20) * 1

....

and so on

Work done on day 12 = (x-110) * 1

Summation gives us net work = 12x - 660.

8x = 12x - 660

This gives x = 165
