The contrast is obvious here - the people on the ship are pale and dressed in white, whereas the man with the cloth is quite tanned. Also, one of the most commonly used features in art is the triangle - you can see that the people have formed almost a perfect triangle so as to lift the man up. Movement can be seen in the cloth itself - it is fluttering in the wind, and all that creates this illusion that the whole painting is sort of moving.
