In plant cells the chloroplasts possess the important pigment chlorophyll which helps in harnessing the energy of the sunlight and to convert it into food.
This food is broken down in the mitochondria of the cell to produce energy.
So in the event of the chloroplasts being damaged and mitochondria being intact, the cells will be able to metabolize food but not produce it.
