There were 10 workers in total.

Given:

A group of workers can do a piece of work in 40 days.

In that, 2 workers were absent due to illness and it took 50 days to complete the work.

To find:

How many workers were there in total.

Solution:

Step 1 of 2:

A group of workers can do a piece of work in 40 days.

Let the total number of workers in the group be 'x'

2 workers were absent due to illness and it took 50 days to complete the work.

So, the actual number of workers is x - 2

The number of man hours required to do the job is same in both the cases.

Therefore,

x × 40 = ( x - 2 ) × 50

Step 2 of 2:

x × 40 =  ( x - 2 ) × 50

40x = 50x - 100

50x - 40x = 100

10x = 100

x = \frac{100}{10\\}

x = 10

The total number of workers in the group is 10
