The Revolt of 1857 was a great challenge to the colonial rule in India. Even though it did not spread all over India and was confined to the northern and central parts of the country, it almost swept away the British rule. The Britishers could quell the Revolt only with the support of the Indian rulers. It was the first massive armed uprising against the British. It is also known as the First War of Independence. After that India entered a new phase of resistance to colonialism which was marked by popular agitations and mass movements.

The revolt of 1857 was an unprecedented event in the history of British rule in India. It united, though in a limeted way, many sections of Indian society for a common cause. Though the revolt failed to achieve the desired goal, it sowed the seeds of Indian nationalism.
