Given

  • Weight of tree = 490 N
  • Gravitational Acceleration of the plant = ½ the Gravitational Acceleration of Earth
  • Gravitational Acceleration (Earth) = 10 m/s²

To Find

  • Mass of the Gulmohar tree

Solution

☯ Weight = Mass × Acceleration

  • So here as we are given that that gravitational acceleration is half that of Earth which means it would be half of 10

→ 10/2

Gravitational Acceleration = 5 m/s²

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

According to the Question :

→ W = Mass × Acceleration

→ 490 = Mass × 5

→ 490/5 = Mass

→ Mass = 98 kg

Knowledged Boost!!

  • Mass is equal to the inertia of the body, earlier it was considered as the amount of matter in a body, but now that ideology has been dropped.
  • Mass is constant no matter wherever we go. It will be the same. But weight changes from place to place as it is dependent on the gravitational acceleration of that place.

\text{\huge\underline{\red{●\ Question:-}}}

:\leadsto A Gulmohar tree weighs 490 N on a planet whose acceleration due to gravity is half that of the Earth. Calculate the mass of the Gulmohar tree.

\text{\huge\underline{\orange{●\ To\ find:-}}}

:\leadsto ■ We have to find the mass of the Gulmohar tree.

\text{\huge\underline{\green{●\ Given:-}}}

:\leadsto ■ Weight of the tree = 490N.

:\leadsto ■ Gravitational acceleration of the planet = \mathrm{\dfrac{1}{2}} (The gravitational acceleration of earth.)

:\leadsto ■ Gravitational acceleration (Earth) = 10m/s².

\text{\huge\underline{\purple{●\ Solution:-}}}

:\leadsto  \mathtt\orange{●\ Weight\ =\ Mass\ ×\ Acceleration}

:\leadsto ■ So here we know that, gravitational acceleration is half that of earth. And it means it would be half of 10.

:\leadsto  \mathtt\orange{●\ Gravitational\ acceleration:-}

:\leadsto  \mathrm{=\ \dfrac{10}{2}}

:\leadsto  \mathrm{=\ 5} m/s².

\text{\large\underline{\pink{●\ According\ to\ the\ question:-}}}

:\leadsto  \mathrm{W\ =\ Mass\ ×\ Acceleration}

:\leadsto  \mathrm{490\ =\ Mass\ ×\ 5}

:\leadsto  \mathrm{\dfrac{490}{5}\ =\ Mass}

:\leadsto  \mathrm\purple{Mass\ =\ 98kg.}

:\leadsto \therefore ● So, the mass of the Gulmohar tree is 98kg.
