Given:-

→ A bullet is fired from a gun.

→ Speed of the bullet = 400 m/s

→ Mass of the gun is 200 times the mass

of the bullet.

To find:-

→ Recoil velocity of the gun.

Solution:-

Let the mass of the bullet be 'm' kilograms.

Then mass of the gun (M) :-

= 200m kg

Now, according to Law of Conservation of momentum :-

⇒ M(-V) + mv = 0

⇒ -MV = -mv

⇒ MV = mv

V = mv/M

Where :-

V is recoil velocity of the gun.

m is mass of the bullet.

v is speed/velocity of the bullet.

M is mass of the gun.

Substituting values, we get :-

⇒ V = m×400/200m

⇒ V = 400m/200m

⇒ V = 2 m/s

Thus, recoil velocity of the gun is 2m/s .

Some Extra Information:-

The conservation of momentum may be stated as :-

'When external force acting on a system is zero, then total linear momentum of the system remains constant'.
