Explanation:

Given

a gun of mass 10 kg fires A bullet of mass 50 g with a velocity 600 m/s with what velocity does the gun recoil

  • When a person shoots a bullet Recoil velocity is the backward velocity. The person who shoots will experience a backward push and recoil velocity is due to conservation of linear momentum of the system.
  • Now initial momentum of the system along with gun and bullet is 0
  • So final momentum of the system = momentum of the gun and momentum of the bullet
  •                                                       = M v’ + mv where v’ is the recoil velocity
  • Now applying conservation of linear momentum we get
  • M v’ + mv = 0
  • So v’ = -(mv) / M negative sign indicates direction of velocity of gun is opposite to direction of velocity of the bullet
  • Now m = 50 g = 0.05 kg
  • Mass of gun M = 10 kg
  • Velocity of bullet = 600 m / s
  • So v’ = - (mv) / M
  •         = - (0.05 x 600) / 10
  •        = - 3 m / s
