To solve this question … we have to remember some key points :-

Law of conservation of momentum

Conversion of units

Direction of momentum

By using law of conservation of momentum …we can deduce that the total momentum of the system is conserved

Change in momentum of first body = Change in momentum of second body

m1×∆v1 = m2×∆v2 (∆ signifies change)

Now we have to put each value keeping in mind that their units coincide with each other and keeping in mind the direction of momentum..

m1 = 10 kg

∆v1 = (v_final - v_initial)_1 = (x-0) m/s

m2 = 30 gram = 0.03 kg

∆v2 = (v_final - v_initial)_2 = (300–0) m/s

Putting the values in equation :-

10×(x-0) = -1×[0.03×(300–0)]

Here - sign is used because the momentum of second body is in opposite direction to the momentum of first body

x = -0.9 m/s

v(recoil) = -0.9 m/s Ans.
