A half metre rule is pivoted at the centre. 20gf is suspended 6cm from pivot on left hand side and 12 gf is suspended 10cm from pivot and on right side of the pivot. What is the clockwise and anti clock wise moment ?I

Answer:

The ruler is in equilibrium, it is balanced.

Explanation:

For a body to be in equilibrium.

=> Sum of clock wise moments = Sum of anti clock wise moments

We have,

>> Clockwise moment = Force × Perpendicular distance

=> 10 gf × 12 cm

  • 120 gf cm

>> Anti clockwise moment = Force × Perpendicular distance

=> 20gf × 6 cm

  • 120 gf cm

∴ Clock wise moments = Anti clockwise moments

∴ The ruler is in equilibrium.

Equilibrium:

When several forces act on a body but produce no change in the state of rest or motion, then the body is said to be in equilibrium. Static equilibrium when in rest and dynamic equilibrium when in motion.
