A hare and a tortoise are having a race along a 2.7 km track.
The tortoise sets off at a steady speed of 3 m/s and does not stop.
The hare is confident that he can win. He speaks with his fans for 2 minutes before setting off at 5 m/s for 6 mins. Then he stops for 5 mins to take a nap. He finally finishes the race at the same speed as before (5 m/s)

Given : A hare and a tortoise are having a race along a 2.7 km track.

To Find :  the average speed of hare and tortoise

Solution:

2.7 km track. = 2700 m

Tortoise sets off at a steady speed of 3 m/s and does not stop.

Hence average speed of Tortoise = 3 m/s

Hare non traveling time = 2 + 5 = 7 mins  = 420 secs

Time taken by hare to complete the race  with 5 m/s  = 2700/5

= 540  secs

Total Time taken by hare = 540 + 420  = 960 secs

Average speed of Hare  = 2700/960

=   90/32

=  45/16

= 2.8125 m/s

average speed of Tortoise = 3 m/s

Average speed of Hare  =  2.8125 m/s
