The chemical energy of a fuel can be converted by combustion into thermal, or heat energy in a heat engine. The engine in turn converts the thermal energy into mechanical energy, as in engines that drive shafts.

A heat engine is a device that converts chemical energy in fuel into Mechanical energy finally.

  • When we burn fuel, the Chemical energy stored in the fuel gets converted into Heat energy. This Heat energy is then converted into Mechanical energy through the use of Heat engines.
  • A heat engine is a device based on the first law of thermodynamics which states that the Net Heat energy provided to a system is used by the gas to do external work or gets utilized to increase the internal energy of the system.
  • In a heat engine, the temperature remains constant. Hence the total Heat energy provided to the system gets converted to mechanical energy. Therefore the total Heat energy is used by the gas to perform external mechanical work.
