Answer:

ANSWER

According to the given problem ,

Distance of the flight above the sea

level =5000m

Distance of the submarine below the

Sea level =−1200m

Vertical distance between flight and

Submarine =∣5000∣+∣−1200∣

=5000+1200

=6200m

Given : A helicopter flying at 120 m above sea level detects a submarine.

The submarine is 39 m below sea level,

To Find :  the vertical distance between the helicopter and the submarine?

Solution:

Sea Level is considered 0

Above sea level are taken as positive

Below sea level are taken as negative

A helicopter flying at 120 m above sea level

Hence at  + 120

The submarine is 39 m below sea level,

Hence at  -39

vertical distance between the helicopter and the submarine  = 120 - (-39)

= 120 + 39

= 159 m

vertical distance between the helicopter and the submarine is 159 m
