Given :
A hen and cow contain 100 heads and legs 280.

Let the number of cows be x
And the number of hens be y

According to the question,

Cow has one head hen has also one head.
x + y = 100 ______(i)
=> x = 100 - y

But cow has four legs and hen has two legs.
4x + 2y = 280 ______(ii)


Putting the value of x in equation (ii) we get,

4 (100 - y) + 2y = 280
=> 400 - 4y + 2y = 280
=> - 2y = 280 - 400
=> - 2y = -120
=> y = - 120/-2 = 60


Putting the value of y in equation (i) we get,

=> x + 60 = 100
=> x = 100 - 60 = 40


Hence,
Number of cows = 40
And the Number of hens = 60
