Let

n = the number of cows

c = milk contribution per cow

t = total milk = 4 litre

No. of cows x milk contribution per cow = Total production

n x c = t ————(1)

But, c =(t/3) = 4/3

Therefore, equation (1) is,

n (4/3) = 4

n=3

Ans: There are 3 cows in the herd

Note: The statement “they give 24 litres milk in six days” is redundant as it is derived from “4 litre of milk each day”.
