A hockey ball of mass 2 kg travelling at 10 m s-1 is struck by a hockey stick so as to return it along its original path with a velocity at 5 m s-1. Calculate the change of momentum occurred in the motion of the hockey ball by the force applied by the hockey stick.

Answer:

Given:

Mass:2kg

Acceleration(of ball thrown):10ms-1

Acceleration(of returning ball):5ms-1

i.e

momentum=mass*acceleration

momentum of ball thrown=10ms-1*2kg=20kgms-1

momentum of returning ball=5kgm-1*2kg=10kgms-1

difference between momentum1 and momentum2

(20kgms-1-10kgms-1)

=10kgms-1(ans)
