Explanation:

Given A hockey ball of mass 300 g travelling at 15 m/s is stuck by a hockey stick, so as to return it along it original path with a velocity of 5 m/s . Calculate the change of momentum occurred in the motion of the hockey ball by the force applied by the hockey stick.

  • Mass of the hockey ball = 300 g = 0.3 kg
  • Velocity of hockey ball v1 = 15 m/s
  • Velocity of hockey ball travelling in opposite direction v2 = - 5 m/s
  • Initial momentum = mv1
  • Final momentum = mv2
  • Change in momentum = Final momentum - initial momentum
  •                                        = mv1 - mv2
  •                                       = m (v1 – v2)
  •                                      = 0.3 (15 – (-5) )
  •                                      = 0.3 x 20
  •                                     = 6 kg m/s
