Yes, this statement is true. At the beginning of a process the reactant has its own individual properties. And the product has many other different properties. After the process, if the reactant was salt and the other substance was water, the salt dissolves in the water, therefore occupying the inter molecular spaces in between. The product, i.e, salt water is a liquid which is different to the solid salt.
