A horizontal force F pushes a 4 kg block (A)
which pushes against a 2 kg block (B) as
shown. The blocks have an acceleration of
3m/s to the right. There is no friction
between the blocks and the surfaces on which
they slide. What is the net force B exerts on
A?

1) 6 N to the right
3) 6 N to the left
2) 12 N to the right
4) 12 N to the left

The net force B exerts on  A is 6 N to the left.

Explanation:

Given data:

Mass of block1 = 4 Kg

Mass of block2 = 2 Kg

Acceleration of blocks = 3 m/s

Net F(BA) = ?

F=ma

F(net) =F − f  , f=ma

|F(AB)| = |F(BA)|

F = 6 x 3 =  18 N

Now

|F(AB)| = |F(BA)| = 2 x 3 = 6 N

Thus the net force B exerts on  A is 6 N to the left.
