A hotel service lift powered by an electric motor, raised a sack of laundry of mass 25kg through 4m in 12 seconds.
(a) How much work is done on the sack of laundry?
(b) Calculate the power output of the lift.
(c) Describe the energy changes that occur when the sack is raised through 4m.

Answer:

a)Acceleration = displacement/time

= 4/12

= 0.3 m/s

Force = mass x acceleration

= 25 x 0.3

= 7.5 Newton

Work = force x displacement

= 7.5 x 4

= 30 joule

b) Power = work / time

= 30 / 12

= 2.5 watt
