Brass is an alloy which is made up of copper metal.
When copper metal is exposed to moisture and air, it forms copper hydroxide and copper carbonate due to the effect of corrosion.
The green coating thus is the copper carbonate which is formed on account of corrosion.

"The green coating is of copper hydroxide and copper carbonate.
Brass is an "alloy" of copper and zinc metal in a certain proportion. If we do not clean the brass utensils a green layer coats them this is because the copper metal reacts with atmospheric oxygen and moisture to form copper hydroxide and copper carbonate which turns greenish color with time.
This process is called corrosion which is one of the types of oxidation reaction in which metal oxidized to hydroxide, oxides or carbonates. "
