Wurtz fitting reaction is responsible for the formation of diphenyl from aryl halide.

  • Wurtz fitting reaction is a reaction that involves the formation of alkyl benzene on the reaction of sodium metal with the haloarenes and haloalkanes in the presence of anhydrous ether.
  • The bimolecular nucleophilic conversion or SN2 mechanism of the methyl chloride into the methyl alcohol involves the addition of aqueous potassium hydroxide or aqueous sodium hydroxide as the reagent.
  • In the medium, the hydroxyl ions that are formed attack from the backside on the molecules of methyl carbon atom or even create the rear end resulting in the inversion for chiral compounds of the chiral centre.
  • The bond gets strengthened up that is formed between the carbon atoms and the oxygen atoms of methyl chloride and the hydroxyl group respectively, then the bond weakens that is formed between the chlorine and the carbon in the methyl group and hence, the new bond is formed and the old bond is broken simultaneously.

Hence, Wurtz fitting reaction is responsible for the formation of diphenyl from aryl halide.
