(a) How does the metallic character of elements change along a period of the periodic table from the left to the right and why?; (b) How does the size of the atom change along a period of the periodic table from the left to right and why?(All India - 2011)

Answer:
a. From left to right in a period the metallic character decreases
reason : As we move left to right in a period the number of electron increases and it become difficult for the nucleus to lose the electrons
b.Size of an atom from left to right in a period increases *but the atom of an inert gases are slightly bigger then the rest
reason: as the number of electrons increases the nucleus pulls the valence electrons more to itself and then the size decrease(atomic radii is the distance between the valence shell from the nucleus )
