a pipe was chosen with a natural hollow stem that was longer and broader than the pungi and made seven holes on the body of the pipe . when it was played , closing and opening some of these holes soft and melodious sounds were produced The instrument was so different from the pungi and had to be named as "Shehnai".

Pungi was modified and perfected by a barber which was very much appreciated by the emperor.Since, it was played for the first time in Shah’s chamber by a Nai, it came to be known as ‘Shehnai.’
