All but means all except

All sparrows but six : The six are other birds (pigeons and doves)

All pigeons but six : The six are other birds (sparrows and doves)

All doves but six : The six are other birds (pigeons and sparrows)

This means that the birds are of equal number.

Hence we have 6/2 = 3 in each case for each variety.

We therefore have :

3 doves + 3 sparrows + 3 pigeons = 9 birds.
