A hydraulic press contains 0.25 m^(3)(250L) of oil. Find the decrease in volume of the oil wen it is subjected to a pressure increase /_\p=1.6xx10^(7)Pa. The bulk modulus of the oil is B=5.0xx10^(9)Pa.

Bulk modulus of oil (B) = - [(Δp) ÷ (ΔV/V_{0})]

⇒ B = - \frac{(0.25m^{3}) (1.6 * 10^{7} Pa)}{5.0 * 10^{9}Pa} = ( - 8.0 × 10^{-4}) m^{3} = (-0.80 L)

Through the increase in pressure is significantly large, the fractional change in its volume is very little.

∴ ΔV/V_{0}  = ( \frac{-8.0 * 10^{-4}m^{3}}{0.25m^{3}}) = - 0.0032 = - 0.32%

Ans) When subjected to the given pressure increase, the volume of oil decreases by (-0.32%)
